FAQ

  • Is this Kabbalah?

Yes! This is "practical Kabbalah." Most of Kabbalah is not magic but mysticism, in particular texts like the Zohar and the Sefer Yetzirah. These texts explore G-d's nature and teach us to cultivate a closer relationship with the eternal, but not necessarily how to wield spiritual power for specific purposes.

  • How do incantation bowls work?

Historically, incantation bowls were prepared by scribes and personalized for customers, who would then bury the bowls outside their homes to ward off demons and ill fortune. While you can follow tradition exactly and bury your bowl, I suggest you display it and enjoy it as a conversation starter.

  • Am I supposed to read/recite the writing in the bowl?

Not really (though you're welcome to!). Incantation bowls are like the scrolls in tefillin or mezuzot: the writing itself has special properties, regardless of whether anyone actually reads it.

  • Can you make me a bowl in Arabic?

I am happy to work with a customer to prepare a bowl in Arabic. However, I believe it’s important that such a bowl reflects the deep cultural and religious significance of the language. For this reason, I prefer to create Arabic bowls only for those with a meaningful, direct relationship to the Arabic language or Islamic faith, as this ensures the inscriptions are an authentic representation of that cultural and religious legacy.

  • Do you make the bowls yourself?

No, I write on pre-made bowls at a pottery shop, which then glazes and fires them. I have hand-made bowls before, but I am not talented at throwing clay... yet.

  • I notice other items in your gallery. Do you make anything else not listed in your store?

Yes! The Sword of Moses features many incantations for different purposes, meant to be written on clay shards, pitchers, metals, and more. Please reach out if you're interested in something beyond the store.
